ASIC company status codes and deregistration reasons

The status code on an ASIC record answers the first question anyone asks about a company: is it still registered? REGD means registered and trading normally, DRGD means deregistered, SOFF means ASIC has started strike-off action, and EXAD means a liquidator, administrator, receiver or controller has been appointed. When a company is deregistered ASIC also records the reason, usually a section of the Corporations Act 2001 such as S601AB (ASIC-initiated deregistration) or S601AA (voluntary deregistration). The same status table covers business names, managed investment schemes, trusts and associations, so several codes only ever appear on those record types.

• company.status from GET /v1/companies/{id} and in every embedded company summary (search results, person roles, weekly summaries, charges).
• company.deregistration.reason (the deregistration reasons table) and company.deregistration.date when the company is deregistered or cancelled.
• businessName.status from GET /v1/business-names/{id}.
• includeDeregistered query parameter on GET /v1/companies/search controls whether DRGD records are returned.
• subType codes DRGD and REIN on new-registrations weekly summary items record deregistrations and reinstatements.

What each status means in practice

EXAD triggers the external administration section

When status.code is EXAD, ASIC attaches a group of documents relating to the external administration or appointment of a controller to the company extract. asicapi returns them in the externalAdministration key of a purchased company extract and exposes them through GET /v1/companies/{id}/external-administration, which reads the extract you hold. ASIC's printed extract carries the disclaimer that the list may not include every relevant document and that state and territory records should also be searched. Show that caveat to end users.

CNCL shows a cancellation date

For a CNCL status, ASIC's guidance is that the date labelled "Date Deregistered" on an extract should be presented as "Date Cancelled". asicapi keeps the value in deregistration.date for both statuses; use status.code to pick the label.
